A lot of people ask us “do you come from a musical family?” Well, our parents have never been musicians, so the answer is no, I guess. But they have been good at other things, including taking photographs - the kind you had to develop and print to see. We cherish the archive of images that endure on the pages of our family photo albums – big binders bound in fading reds and blues, chronologically labeled with yellowed masking tape, charting our childhood and beyond.
Those family albums inspired the title of the record you are holding in your hands or playing on your stereo right now. It’s something that has, in a way, been a lifetime in the making - even if it was just an idea to file away for the future. We may not have come from a musical family but we’ve made it a musical family, and a brother and sister who love to sing together really ought to make a record!
Well the future came, the time was right, and in 2015 we recorded a collection of folk songs in Toronto. Five of them are original compositions that we wrote for the record. The other six are cover songs that we love to sing – a mix of old favourites and more recent revelations. We are indebted to the songwriters, original performers and previous interpreters of these great songs as well as to the people in our lives who helped us discover them. We hope we did them justice!
An incredibly talented group of musicians and sound engineers enabled us to realize our vision and have a great time doing it, and the result is the album now before you: The Family Album. We hope you enjoy it!
